Club wants official flight school to come to ILM

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – A new flight school wants to take off in the Cape Fear, but they have to find a space to begin larger classes and operations.

So they are looking at the Wilmington International Airport’s reserve space.

The Cape Fear Flying Club wants to launch a larger commercial pilot training school at ILM.
They talked before the Airport Authority about their plan to bring a school that allows potential pilots to have access to classes, flight simulators and aircraft.

The flying club holds courses now but want to find a home for operations they can expand in.

“It’s jobs, it’s more pilots, it’s flight instructor jobs,” said Zachary Piech who is a co-founder of the class and club. It could be a huge benefit to our local jobs and universities whether UNCW or Cape Fear Community to bring in a degree program. That means more students more money into the community. So the impact could be great.”

Airport Authority members tell us  the decision is at the mercy of staff at the General Aviation Committee.
