Coast Guard rescues 2 in Wrightsville Beach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Coast Guard rescued two people from a grounded pleasure craft Sunday near Wrightsville Beach.

Watchstanders at Station Wrightsville Beach received a request for help at about 4:52 a.m. from a man on an 18-foot boat aground in Shinn Creek approximately one mile from the station. He expressed concerns about a woman who experienced cuts on her feet and exposure to cool weather.

A 29-foot Response Boat Small crew from Station Wrightsville Beach launched at about 5:05 a.m. and arrived on scene at approximately 5:12 a.m. The crew took the two people to the Wrightsville Beach Wildlife Boat Ramp.

Sea Tow plans to salvage the grounded vessel.

“Low light and unsafe speed may have played a role in this vessel running aground outside the channel,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Evan Guettler, RBS operator for the case. “Maintaining a safe speed at all times is critical to operating a boat safely.”
