Coastal Carolina Wildlife Rehab receives outpouring of support after Facebook post

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An animal sanctuary is gaining traction after making a post to Facebook, looking for properties to release rehabilitated raccoons.

Coastal Carolina Wildlife Rehab has been taking in animals since 2008. While the rehab center has gained popularity for their raccoons, the center also takes in birds, fawns, otters, turtles, and almost all wildlife native to North Carolina.

The center is the only one the area that can legally take in rabies prone animals like raccoons. Within a matter of hours of making their post, director and former vet tech Jennifer Leonard said support poured in from people offering their properties for the raccoons’ release.

“If there’s no place for them to go, then they end up being euthanized and that’s not fair to them if it’s because of overpopulation with people, over construction, or the mom built the nest in the attic and the homeowner didn’t want her there,” she said.
