Carolina Cup and Colonial Cup to run at same time due to football
CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) – The Colonial Cup is moving to the spring. The Carolina Cup Racing Association’s board of directors has decided to cancel the fall card at the Springdale Racecourse and run both of its premiere steeplechase events in the spring. The Colonial Cup will continue as a grade one race with the Carolina Cup, typically the kickoff to the National Steeplechase Association season, will be for novice jumpers on the same card.
South Carolina has hosted the Carolina Cup each spring and the Colonial Cup in November, a time when the minds of most sports fans in the state are focused on football. Organizers think having both races in the spring will help attract fans and make it easier to plan sponsorships.
