Columbus County preparing for possible winter weather this weekend

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — In the Cape Fear, one area that could be hard hit by the winter storm this weekend is Columbus County.

According to forecasts, Columbus County is expecting some accumulation of ice over the weekend, with projections between one and two-tenths of an inch.

While that may not sound like a lot, Sheriff Bill Rogers said they are preparing for anything that could occur.

He said their four-wheel drive trucks are available to help get to anyone if something occurs.

And first responders will be on standby, ready to assist in any way necessary.

“We got extra staff coming in, we got everybody’s on call starting Saturday morning at 6 o’clock until I deem it necessary to take everybody off call, where we can respond to all collisions,” Rogers said.

Sheriff Rogers also adds that if weather conditions deteriorate over the weekend due to the storm and if Columbus County is impacted by significant ice accumulations, it’s best to remain home and off the roads.
