Columbus County third grader grows enormous cabbage

RIEGELWOOD, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County third grader is extremely proud of two enormous cabbages she grew in her family’s garden.

Kyra Sutton is enrolled at Acme-Delco Elementary School in Riegelwood. Earlier this year, each of the 38 third graders at the school were given a 4-6 inch cabbage plant to grow at home.

Its part of the Bonnie Plants ‘”Third Grade Cabbage Program” which aims to get children interested in gardening.

When schools were forced to send students home permanently due to the pandemic, the company suspended the program.

“I’m really proud of the cabbage and how I grew it,” said Sutton. “I didn’t let the coronavirus stop me from growing the cabbage.”

Sutton brought home her plant as well as another plant the school secretary gave her. She planted both of them in her great-grandparents’ garden.

“She did really good with it, she watered it and she made sure she took care of it,” said Kyra’s mother, Angie Sutton.

Recently, her family harvested one of the cabbages which weighed 31 pounds. They cut up the cabbage and gave portions of it to more than two dozen people.

Kyra Sutton’s teacher plans to send photos of the cabbage to Bonnie Plants. The company will pick one winner from each state to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

While Sutton doesn’t know if she’ll win, she’s extremely proud of her hard work and seeing how large her cabbages have grown.
