Commissioners approve new cell tower, cost for inlet upkeep

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commissioners voted to approve a new cell tower in the Veterans Park along Halyburton Memorial Parkway.

A few months back Milestone Communications and Verizon brought neighbors together to see the plans for the tower.

It will stand 140 feet high around the Veterans Park Ball Fields.

When we heard from neighbors they said they looked forward to better cell service possibly coming to the area.

County leaders have a price tag for homeowners who live near Mason’s Inlet between Wrightsville Beach and Figure Eight Island.

New Hanover County Commission approved upwards to $3.3 million be assessed to homeowners to help with the maintenance of the inlet.

It was relocated more than 16 years ago as erosion was significantly impacting Shell Island.

The county commission approved the costs be first heard by the public on October 1 before individual billing goes out to land owners.

The costs are down $400,000 than 5 years ago.
