Chemours plans to offer filters to some homes near plant

FAYETTTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – The company that makes a compound that has been found in private wells near its North Carolina plant wants to install water filter systems at homes served by those wells.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that state records show that Chemours plans to put carbon treatment systems in the wells.

The compound GenX is made at Chermours’ plant in Bladen County. The chemical is used to make nonstick cookware and other products. North Carolina environmental officials have been investigating GenX since it was found in the Cape Fear River in 2016.

Chemours has since agreed to stop discharging the compound into the river, but the chemical has been found in more than 250 private wells near the plant. Chemours has been providing bottled water to homes with elevated levels of GenX.
