Conservation of the Venus flytrap in Brunswick County highlighted in new documentary

BRUNSWICK COUNTY (WWAY) — Boiling Spring Lakes is one of the only ‘hot spots’ for the Venus flytrap in North Carolina, and efforts of conservation for these plants have come in a variety of forms.

Robert Ford, a film producer and director from the UK, made the trip to Boiling Spring Lakes to film a documentary, “Flytrap Town”, surrounding the plants he finds so fascinating.

Partnering with Venus Flytrap Champions, a local conservation group, Ford has been documenting the lives of the conservationists and the flytraps themselves in their natural habitat.

Ford says this project is for the plants, the conservationists, and the state of North Carolina.

“We want to make a visually beautiful film with emotional stories of the human conservationists who are so passionate about this work and, I think, we’re trying to make a film that’s very special and will make the people of North Carolina very proud,” said Ford.

The documentary has been in the works for more than four years, and Ford has been ecstatic to film these plants in the wild.
