Cops find 56 pounds of pot during traffic stop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A traffic stop led Wilmington police to a big drug bust yesterday. After pulling over a car for routing violations, police found about 56 pounds of marijuana in plain view inside the car.

Police say the pot has a street value of about $40,000.

Melody Ann Mejia, 21, and Joel Peña, 24, both of Charlotte, are charged with trafficking in marijuana. They are both in the New Hanover County Detention Center under bonds of $300,000 and $1 million respectively.
