Cougars take Game 2, UNCW Baseball falls 6-5
WILMINGTON, N.C. (UNCWSports.com) – Clay Hunt drove in two runs, including the eventual winning run in the eighth, as the College of Charleston evened its Colonial Athletic Association series on Friday with a 6-5 win over UNCW at Brooks Field.
The Cougars (35-17, 15-8 CAA) moved into a tie for second in the conference standings with Elon while the Seahawks (33-20, 14-9 CAA) enter the final game of the season in fourth. Earlier in the day, Northeastern topped Delaware to win the regular season title.
Bradley Dixon and Ari Sechopoulos had two hits apiece for the Cougars, who built a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning. Luke Morgan scored twice and stole two bases.
Reliever Justin Baker (1-2) earned the win with two innings of work. Nathan Ocker posted his 10 save of the season, retiring both batters he faced in the ninth.
Zack Canada, Mason Berne and Greg Jones each had two hits for the Seahawks. Berne gave UNCW a first inning lead with a two-run homer, his 12th of the season. Cole Weiss also had two hits and drove in two runs. His single in the seventh tied the game at five-all.
Reliever Logan Beehler (1-1) allowed the winning run in the top of the eighth.
How it happened: Beehler walked Morgan to open the eighth and Morgan moved into scoring position with this second stolen base of the game. A ground out to second advanced him to third where he would score one batter later on Hunt’s sac fly to right for a 6-5 lead.
Inside the box score: Charleston landed its leadoff hitter on base four times and that runner came around to score three times … UNCW had three two-out RBI’s and was 6-for-15 with two outs … CofC scored all four runners from third with less than two out while UNCW was 1-of-4.
Notes: Berne has now reached safely in 47 straight games … The bullpen loss was just the fifth of the season for the Seahawks … UNCW’s pitching staff has 481 strikeouts on the season, ranking third in program history … Offensively, the Seahawks have struck out 477 times, rankings second … Luke Gesell tossed three innings of relief, allowing one hit and one run, unearned.
