“Couldn’t think of any better place to work:” Kure Beach police chief says farewell to the force

"I'm probably going to take some time off, hang out with my kid and grandkid, and just see what life on the other side is like."

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) –Out with the old, and in with the new. At this week’s Kure Beach Town Council meeting, a bittersweet announcement was made- Police Chief Michael Bowden is hanging up his badge after nine years at the helm and 24 years on the force.

“Couldn’t think of any better place to work,” Bowden said.

In a heartfelt letter to the council, Bowden said- “it’s time for a new chapter.” As he looks ahead, Chief Bowden admits stepping into the unknown- but with excitement.

“Nervous. Not sure what I’m going to do next, but I’ll figure it out,” Bowden shared.

From officer to chief, Bowden has seen it all over two decades. Now, he’s ready to swap late-night calls for hobbies like woodworking.

“I’m probably going to take some time off, hang out with my kid and grandkid, and just see what life on the other side is like,” Bowden shared.

And stepping into his shoes? Lieutenant Brandon Bailey.

“I’m nervous, but I know I’ve got a solid team. The citizens, the council, the mayor—they’ve all got our back,” Bailey shared.

Now, Bailey officially takes over on July 1st. His first mission? Connection.

“Community policing. Getting to know our citizens better- letting them see us out there, keeping them safe,” Bailey shared.

“It’s exciting changes in Kure Beach- with one chapter closing and another just beginning,” Bailey shared.

Good luck to Chief Bowden- may retirement treat you well. And to Chief-to-be Bailey- Kure Beach is in good hands.
