Country Club of Landfall releases statement following July 3 fireworks fight
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — A week after a security guard was seriously injured while responding to a fight during the Country Club of Landfall’s Independence Day fireworks celebration, the Country Club of Landfall and the Landfall Council of Associations have released a statement addressing the incident.
According to the organizations, the July 3 assault was not the first time a large crowd has created safety concerns during the club’s annual fireworks event.
Security guard Russell James was seriously injured after witnesses said he attempted to break up a fight involving several individuals before he was assaulted.
In a statement sent to residents, the organizations referenced a similar incident in 2025, when an overflow crowd caused severe parking problems and blocked access for emergency vehicles.
The statement also said those involved in last week’s altercation were intoxicated. Officials confirmed there was no public access to the fireworks event, leading some residents to believe the individuals involved were guests of members or residents.
One Landfall resident, who asked not to be identified, said they witnessed the aftermath of the altercation.
“I did see where the two security guards’ cars came up, and there was a lot of commotion over there. That’s all I saw,” the resident said. “But it’s pretty sad that these people would actually do that. That’s pretty upsetting.”
The Wilmington Police Department is continuing to investigate the assault and is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators.
