NORTH CAROLINA (WWAY) — COVID-19 cases are on the rise this month, including here in the Cape Fear.

According to the CDC, in some states, cases have risen by more than 7%. In North Carolina, positive testing numbers have remained stable, but are still higher than earlier this year.

COVID-19 deaths—while relatively rare—are also up in the state by more than 30% this week. That’s due to a trio of new highly contagious variants of the virus, known as FLiRT strains. Novant Health confirmed that cases are also up in the Cape Fear in a statement from Senior Vice President and Chief Safety and Quality Officer Dr. David Priest:

“We are observing an increase in COVID-19 cases among our patients, both in our ambulatory sites and hospitals. As in previous years, there is a smaller summer wave of infections, which is also evident from the rising levels of COVID in state wastewater. Although we are far from the peak levels of the pandemic, COVID-19 still poses a risk, particularly for older adults and those with chronic health conditions. Anyone who suspects they have COVID-19 should consult their physician to determine if antiviral treatments are right for them.”

Updated vaccines are expected to be available in August and September.
