Crash leaves hole in Pine Valley home meant to become church’s foster mission
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A stolen vehicle barrels into A Pine Valley home. All of this happening in broad daylight. It is now leaving police and a church wondering why it happened.
Police told WWAY this happened around lunch time Tuesday when a passerby called 911 about a car lodged in the Chalmers Drive home.
The driver was not in the home nor in the car when police and fire arrived.
“It’s definitely a setback,” said Don Horton.
Fortunately no one was inside the home when it happened. The home belongs to Pine Valley Church of Christ. The congregation was renovating it for a special purpose.
“We were going to use this house within a matter of months at the most for transitional care for foster boys,” said Horton.
Horton is the church youth minister saying the church was approved to foster teens who are aging out of the foster care system. This home was their foundation for that effort.
Now there’s no telling if its foundation is solid.
“As soon as the police report is filed then they’ll go through the insurance company,” said church office manager Robert Stanley. “And then we’ll probably get some different quotes from contracting companies and go from there.”
Police say the vehicle was stolen from a nearby Waltmoor Road home early Tuesday morning. The church hoping insurance can cover it all, but they are accepting any aid neighbors want to pitch in.
“This is a venture that is definitely needed in the community and to help these kids out and to keep them out from being in the gangs and on the streets and stuff,” Horton said.
