Crews at scene at a gas leak in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –Crews are responding to a gas leak at 5th and Meares Streets near downtown Wilmington.

According to the Wilmington Fire Department, a 2 inch gas main was hit by an excavator. WFD  arrived at the scene late Tuesday morning to locate and cap the leak. This has caused 5th Ave to be closed between Wright and Marstellar in all directions.

Due to the leak, some residents near the location have been evacuated from the area.
