Crews respond to fire at Wilmington apartment complex

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fire crews were dispatched at 5 a.m. after receiving a call about a fire at the Sandy Ridge Apartments, 2505 Troy Drive, early Saturday.

WFD Assistant Chief Frank Blackley says the fire started in a trash can on the porch outside of a second floor apartment. The fire spread up the siding and extended into the attic of the building.

Crews were able to keep fire damage confined to the single apartment, exterior wall and attic areas. The fire was under control by 5:30 a.m. Officials say cause appears to have been improperly disregarded smoking material.  The estimated damage is $70,000 and the contents at $10,000.

No injuries were reported.
