Cucaloras Riverfront viewing hit with cold temperatures

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– It’s the first time the Cucalorus Film Festival has shown free outdoor screenings on Wilmington’s Riverfront, but it fell on a very cold weekend.

Event Organizers say if it hadn’t been for the low temperatures, they had expected to see around 300 people at the Riverfront viewing. While they didn’t see anywhere close to that number, several people say the cold didn’t stop them.

“No we decided to get out our winter coats and make a fun evening of it,” resident Matt Baumgardner said.

Baumgardner says this is the fifth time he’s attended the Cucalorus Film Festival. He looks forward to seeing and sharing ideas with film makers every year. Now that the festival has an outdoor screening, Baumgardner says he wanted to take full advantage of it with his two small children.

“Especially with this kind of public event where he can see some of the people that work on the Cucalorus event and not just walk right into a theatre and watch a movie and leave,” Baumgardner said. “He gets to kind of see what it’s about and I thought that was important to bring him down and to show him as well as my daughter what it feels like to be apart of Cucalorus here in Wilmington.”

Organizers say they plan to show King Kong at the Riverfront park Saturday night, but they are going to wait to see what the weather does before they make a final decision.
