‘Dawson’s Creek’ star James Van Der Beek dies at 48 following cancer battle

(WWAY) — Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery on the television drama “Dawson’s Creek,” has died, according to a statement posted to his Instagram account. He was 48.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” the post said. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Van Der Beek revealed in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He told People at the time that he had been privately dealing with the illness and was taking steps toward treatment with the support of his family.
“I have colorectal cancer,” Van Der Beek said in a statement. “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.”
Van Der Beek rose to fame starring in “Dawson’s Creek,” which aired from 1998 to 2003 and was filmed in Wilmington.
