Daylight Saving Time starts this weekend
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Get ready to lose some sleep this weekend as Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday morning.
All clocks will spring forward an hour at 2 am Sunday.
Daylight Saving Time was first used during World War 1 and 2 to conserve energy but did not come into use during peacetime until 1966.
Antoinette Izzo is a sleep specialist for Novant Health.
She said it’s important to get a good night’s sleep Saturday night as losing that hour of sleep can be dangerous.
”There is about a 6 percent increase in fatal car accidents the week after the time change,” Izzo said. “There is an increase in heart attacks, there’s a loss of productivity just across all industries with workers so there’s pretty major impacts.”
Izzo said it takes about a week for our bodies to get used to the time change.
She also said a good way to adapt to the change is to not drink any caffeine Saturday night and to spend plenty of time outside Sunday.
