Deadly NC shooting suspect captured in Mexico after 10 years

DURHAM, NC (AP) — Authorities say a man who was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting over 10 years ago has been taken into custody in Mexico by the Charlotte Division of the FBI.

The US Department of Justice told media outlets that 47-year-old Claudio Gutierrez-Cruz was taken into federal custody in Mexico City, Mexico, Thursday.

Authorities say Gutierrez-Cruz was arrested in Hidalgo, Mexico, in April. He was detained in Mexico City, Mexico, until he was extradited to the U.S. Thursday.

Authorities say Guiterrez-Cruz is charged with murder in the June 2005 death of Francisco Lopez-Bautista at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Officials say Gutierrez-Cruz is accused of shooting Lopez-Bautista during a dispute over pine straw.

Gutierrez-Cruz will be held in the Durham County Detention Center. It isn’t clear if he has an attorney.
