Death toll reaches 17 in NC, 1,200 roads remain closed

(WWAY) — This remains a significant disaster that affects much of our state is the message Governor Roy Cooper delivered during a noon press conference on Monday, as he provided an update on the aftermath of what was Hurricane Florence.

As of this morning, the number of people across the state who have died from the storm topped 17.

The flooding continues to saturate roads, homes, and has turned some towns and cities into islands.

Nearly 1200 roads are closed, including parts of major connectors into and out of southeastern North Carolina.

As of noon, more than 2,600 people and 300 animals had been rescued. That number will continue to grow, as rescues are continuing today.

Governor Cooper said 23 trucks loaded with supplies have arrived in Wilmington. Bladen and Columbus Counties were also added to the list of counties that will receive help from FEMA. Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover Counties were already declared eligible for aid.

If you have a life threatening emergency, continue to call 911. For any other help or information dial 211.  The number for the deaf and hard of hearing is (888) 892-1162.

484,000 people across the state remain without power.
