DECIDE FOR YOURSELF: Watch Trump talk about 2nd Amendment at Wilmington rally
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Regardless of your political views, you’d probably agree Donald Trump’s visit to Wilmington yesterday created a lot of excitement in the Port City.
It gave about 6,000 supporters a chance to see in person the man they hope will be the country’s next president.
It gave protestors a chance to voice publicly their concerns about the Republican nominee.
During his speech, Trump hit on many issues in his campaign against Hillary Clinton for the nation’s highest office. He talked about North Carolina’s voter ID law that’s been overturned by an appeals court. He talked about terrorism. He talked about jobs. He talked about guns.
It was something Trump said about guns that has made national headlines since even before he left the stage at UNCW’s Trask Coliseum. It came in a section of his speech in which he pointed out what he believes Clinton will do on certain issues as president and then contrasted his own positions on those same topics. Trump said Clinton wants to “essentially abolish the Second Amendment,” which ensures gun rights for Americans, and said if she’s elected nothing could stop her stacking the US Supreme Court with justices that would help her do it.
“If she gets to pick her judges… nothing you can do, folks,” Trump said before a seemingly off-the-cuff statement that has become a topic of national conversation. “Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know.”
So what did Trump mean? Detractors have suggested it was an encouragement of violence against the Democratic nominee. Trump and his supporters have said it was an encouragement to organize against a Clinton victory and accused Clinton-friendly media of making a mountain out of a molehill. US House Speaker Paul Ryan said it sounded “like a joke gone bad.”
