Dedication held for new memorial plaque in Halyburton Park
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A special sign dedication was held at Halyburton Park on Tuesday in honor of the veteran the park is named after.
Officials with the city of Wilmington and New Hanover County joined the World War II Home Front Coalition to dedicate a new sign in honor of William D. Halyburton Jr.
A former student at New Hanover High School, Halyburton was a US Marine who died during World War II while saving another soldier.
Halyburton was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
New Hanover High School Principal Philip Sutton says Halyburton’s service is a proud part of the school’s legacy.
“He’s an example of sacrifice to our students and to our community. We’re proud of that, and we want to honor that. We’re excited to have this opportunity today,” he said.
The new plaque can be viewed near the entrance of the park’s welcome center.
