Deep-fried Jell-O is new sweet treat at this year’s NC State Fair

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Adults and kids alike are in for a new deep-fried sweet treat at this year’s N.C. State Fair. S2 Concessions—which introduced deep-fried Girl Scout cookies, peanut butter pickles and red velvet mini donuts in previous years—will this year offer fair-goers deep-fried Jell-O.

Yes, that’s right…deep-fried Jell-O! It’s more like a ball of Jell-O, surrounded by a biscuit-like batter. When fried, the Jell-O blends into the batter, giving the Jell-O a gooey consistency.

“It’s sort of like cherry cobbler, with all the flavor but not the fruit. Or maybe like a jelly-filled donut, but with a lot more Jell-O and a lot less batter,” said Scott Strother of S2 Concessions.

Why Jell-O? Strother said his inspiration came straight from this year’s State Fair of Texas, where deep-fried Jell-O won “Best Taste” in the Big Tex Choice Awards.

Why cherry? Strother said it’s one of the top-selling flavors of Jell-O.

Never mind that it’s deep-fried, Strother makes his version of the sweet treat with sugar-free Jell-O (and a couple of other secret ingredients) surrounded by gluten-free batter. Top if off with a dusting of powdered sugar, a dollop of whipped cream and the requisite cherry garnish, and you have an adult take on a childhood favorite.

Have a hankering for Strother’s other creations? Right alongside of deep-fried Jell-O, you’ll still find deep-fried mini donuts, Girl Scout cookies, red velvet mini donuts, peanut butter pickles, and bacon-wrapped Tootsie Rolls at the fair.

Look for S2 Concessions’ Mini Donut Trailer in the Kiddieland section on the curb at this year’s N.C. State Fair, Thursday, October 13, through Sunday, October 23, 2016.
