RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Election results will not be released statewide until after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after voting hours were extended at one North Carolina precinct.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted unanimously to extend voting by one hour at the Littleton precinct in Halifax County. The site opened late Tuesday morning due to a synchronization issue with electronic poll books, and backup procedures were not immediately used.

The polling location, at Littleton United Methodist Church on East South Main Street, will remain open until 8:30 p.m.

State law allows the Board of Elections to extend voting hours at sites where voting is interrupted for at least 15 minutes.

All votes cast after 7:30 p.m. at the Littleton precinct will be counted as provisional ballots, according to state law.

Election officials cannot release results statewide until voting has concluded at every polling site.
