Democratic Party Press Conference in Wilmington addresses key election issues

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — With Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump visiting Wilmington, the New Hanover County Democratic Party took the opportunity to hold a press conference aimed at emphasizing their values in the lead-up to the upcoming election.

At the New Hanover County Democratic Party headquarters, a gathering of elected officials and volunteers came together to address several pressing issues.

Among the prominent topics discussed were reproductive rights and the ongoing candidacy of Mark Robinson for governor.

Speakers at the event strongly criticized Robinson’s platform, raising concerns about his alignment with Trump’s agenda.

They argued that this alignment poses a significant threat to abortion rights and health care access, while also fostering division within communities.

Among those who spoke were Olivia Troye, a former national security official in the Trump administration; State Senator Rachel Hunt; New Hanover County Commissioner Rob Zapple; and U.S. Air Force veteran Michael Avellino.

Troye shared her personal experiences related to disaster relief, emphasizing the negative impact of politicizing responses to crises.

“I can tell you firsthand I have never seen disaster relief or response to disaster relief politicized as I did under Donald Trump,” Troye stated.

“I’ve worked under both Republican and Democratic administrations throughout my career. Politics should never come into play in that. When people are hurting, they deserve to get the relief they need, regardless of how they voted or who they supported along the way.”

Commissioner Zapple also underscored the importance of the upcoming election, emphasizing its significance not only at the national level but also within the state and local context.
