Auto repair shop holds demolition derby

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Start your engines, its about to get bumpy.

Towing and automotive repair shops in Wilmington and Hampstead got together for a demolition derby in Hampstead. The group hosts these derbies every 4 months.

Ryan Roane is the owner of Ryan’s automotive and has a big hand in organizing the event.

“We have only been doing these races in Hampstead but we’ll be expanding out to Bolivia soon,” Roane said.

The race consisted of nine races with cars they came across and fixed up for the race and to slam into each other. Michelle Mena was a first time racer and the only girl in the race so she did not know what it would be like.

“It’s scary kind of because you don’t know when someone’s going to run into you and then the first time someone does, it jars you. And so you’re like ‘oh my God I’m getting out of this car right now’ and then you can’t cause somebody is behind you.”

The race had multiple heats to complete for those competing and many spectators came out to watch the cars tear up the dirt.
