Deputies: Man charged with assaulting, robbing his own grandfather
BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Deputies in Bladen County say they arrested a man for assaulting and robbing his own grandfather.
The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office said John Spurling, 32, jumped on his 76-year-old grandfather from behind Saturday and beat him to the floor. They said Spurling then used a plastic zip tie to bind the elderly man’s hands. Investigators say the two men lived together.
Deputies said Spurling then took his grandfather’s debit card, cash and car. They say he left his grandfather on the kitchen floor and locked the doors to the house. The man was later found by another grandson, who had to force his way in and use a knife to get the zip ties off.
Spurling, who was arrested Thursday, is charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault and larceny of a motor vehicle. He is in the Bladen County Jail under $73,500 bond.
His grandfather was treated and released from the hospital.
