Deputy injured in crash on US 421 while responding to emergency call

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A deputy responding to an emergency was involved in a crash Monday morning on U.S. 421 North near Willard.
Trooper K.J. Brown said the crash happened just before 8:30 a.m., about two-tenths of a mile south of Pineywoods Road. The deputy was running emergency traffic with lights and sirens and attempted to pass a vehicle in front of them, when that vehicle turned left in front of the patrol car, resulting in a collision.
After the crash, the deputy’s vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway, struck a fence, and then hit a tree, Trooper Brown said.
The deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other driver was not hurt.
The crash remains under investigation.
