DEQ expands PFAS well testing to more areas in Southeastern NC
(WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality is requiring Chemours to expand eligibility for private well testing tied to PFAS contamination, now covering additional portions of New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus and Pender counties.
The decision follows a detailed review of existing residential well data conducted by Chemours and DEQ staff as part of ongoing work under the 2019 consent order between DEQ, Cape Fear River Watch and Chemours.
According to DEQ, roughly 14,000 more residences are now eligible for sampling in the expanded area. Current information indicates only a portion of those households rely on private wells for drinking water, but impacted homeowners will be notified and given access to clean water if contamination is found.
Residents within the new sampling area who want their wells tested can call Chemours at (910) 678-1100 or complete the company’s online form. Callers are asked to leave their name, phone number, email address and mailing address. Return calls may come from Parsons Environment and Infrastructure, the authorized contractor handling the sampling process.
Residents who previously requested testing but were not eligible will be contacted by Parsons if their home is now included.
