People hit the sands on Memorial Day despite weather concerns
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Memorial Day there were plenty of vacationers at Wrightsville Beach despite some clouds and rain.
Some visitors said they were concerned about weather conditions because of the threat of Bonnie which at one point was a tropical storm and could have had a big impact in the Cape Fear region.
But visitors said the breaks of sunshine throughout the weekend were enough to make their trip to the beach worthwhile.
Ben Myatt, a visitor from Atlanta, GA, said he almost cancelled his plans but he decided to take a chance on his weekend possibly being washed out.
“Didn’t think the weather was a going to be as good as it turned out to be,” said Myatt. “Kind of got a mixed bag of a little rain and sunshine but it turned out to be a beautiful day besides a couple sprinkles.”
Sara Gurkin, a UNCW graduate said she’s pretty familiar with the weather in the Cape Fear region. And she said it’s always good to be ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store.
“I was preparing myself for a tropical storm. I was preparing for the worst. I brought my rain jacket into town,” said Gurkin. “The Wilmington weather is always hit or miss but when the sun comes out we are all really happy.”
WWAY Meteorologist Gabrielle Deabler said since Bonnie stalled near Charleston, South Carolina we were able to see some sun and some rain.
“We just kind of got the those showers. Those periods of showers that we saw over the weekend with the peaks of sunshine which is pretty typical with a system like this,” said Deabler. “You kind of get the outskirts, and you get those bands that move through with that circulations.”
Deabler said we could continue to see some remnants of Bonnie for a more few days.
She adds said some parts of South Carolina saw some heavy rains and flooding this weekend.
