Detailed NC Medicaid financial audit looks at big picture
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The first detailed financial audit of North Carolina’s Medicaid program in 20 years shows some improvement in its fiscal picture but cash outlays are still trying to catch up with pending liabilities, particularly on payments to medical providers.
State Auditor Beth Wood released financial statements Monday on the entire Department of Health and Human Services, which spends more than $18 billion annually. More than $13 billion goes to the Division of Medical Assistance, which runs Medicaid.
Lawmakers sought the detailed audit to see how specific agencies are faring beyond what they are spending in the state budget.
The report found the Medicaid fund balance – basically assets minus liabilities – was minus $350 million as of last June 30. But that’s nearly $59 million better compared to a year ago.
