Detectives: Man buying candy robs Dollar General at gunpoint


NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Deputies are looking for help identifying a man who they say robbed a New Hanover County Dollar General store at gunpoint Thursday night.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s detectives say it happened at the Dollar General at 2523 Castle Hayne Road shortly after 9:30 p.m. That’s where they say a man gave the clerk money to buy some candy.

Deputies say when the employee opened the register, the man pulled out a small, black handgun and demanded the clerk give him “all the money.” The man took off from the store in an unknown direction.

The suspect is described as a black male who’s about 40. Deputies say he was wearing a bright green hat, dark green t-shirt, blue jeans and dark shoes.
