District Attorney Jon David announces he will not seek re-election in 2026

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — District Attorney Jon David, who serves Bladen, Brunswick, and Columbus counties, announced he will not seek reelection in November 2026, saying this will be his final term after nearly 30 years in public service.
In a Thanksgiving message, David reflected on his career, calling the role “the greatest honor and privilege of my life,” and said serving as a voice for victims has given him “profound personal and professional fulfillment.” He thanked his family, colleagues, law enforcement partners, and the voters who entrusted him with the position.
David said the accomplishments of his office have been possible because of “an outstanding team of public servants, past and present,” and emphasized that the pursuit of justice with integrity has guided his tenure.
He said his decision not to run again is deeply personal.
“When the election filing period opens next Monday, I will not file for this important position,” he wrote. “We still have meaningful work to accomplish in the year ahead, and I promise to lead with the same passion and commitment that has defined my service.”
David assured the community that he will serve with complete devotion until his final day in office and expressed strong confidence in the current staff, noting that the office “has always been greater than any single individual.”
As part of his announcement, he endorsed First Assistant District Attorney Jenna Earley to succeed him. He said Earley has previously led both the Columbus and Brunswick county offices, handled major cases in Bladen County, and earned admiration throughout the justice system.
“By every standard, one person stands out as the right leader to carry forward our mission,” he wrote, calling Earley’s integrity, judgment, and experience essential qualities for the next District Attorney.
David was elected District Attorney in 2010, after serving as a prosecutor in New Hanover County with his twin brother, Ben. Looking back on more than 15 years in the office, David said he is proud of what the team has accomplished and committed to preparing the organization for continued success over the next year.
Although he is stepping away from the DA’s office after his term ends, David said he plans to continue practicing law in the region and serving the community in new ways.
