Dogs shred into the weekend at ‘Skate Dog’ for second year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Here’s something that you don’t see every day. Dogs riding skateboards.

The second annual Skate Dog event was held outside of Aussie Island Surf Shop on Saturday.

Furry participants train for weeks to stay on the skateboard as they ride.

50% of all the proceeds from the event go to Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue.

Ocean Events USA is the company behind the event who also hosts Surf Dog. Where dogs, you guessed it, surf.

But believe it or not, Ocean Events USA Owner, Jay Carillo, says that it’s actually harder for dogs to learn how to skate than learn how to surf.

“Well surfboards are bigger too, so they’ve got that, but yeah I think it’s easier for a dog to learn how to surf than it is skateboarding,” said Carrillo.

If you want to take your dog to the waves, the Ninth Annual Surf Dog will be held on May 18th at Carolina Beach Pier.
