DOT requests $96K to improve troublesome intersection on Hwy. 17 in Pender Co.

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation hopes to improve an intersection on Highway 17 in Pender County known for accidents before the median project gets started.

Pender County Commissioners received an update from the DOT this week about the plans for Sloop Point Loop Road on Highway 17. That is the intersection where the Eddings family crashed almost two years ago killing their two children.

DOT Engineer Chad Kimes said they have requested $96,000 for advance flashers and a dynamic red extension light.

“If the funding is approved, a signal plan change will have to be designed and materials will be ordered,” Kimes said. “If all things go smoothly, installation can begin June/July.”

A dynamic red extension will monitor the traffic and will extend the red time if it detects opposing traffic possibly running a red light.

County Commissioner David Williams said something needed to be done to the intersection much sooner than waiting for the median project. Williams said there have been several bad accidents at this light.
