UPDATE: DOT urges drivers to remain vigilant; road closures in Sunset Beach

SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Heavy rain is continuing to pour down throughout our area. In Sunset Beach, water has caused at least one sinkhole to form on Sunset Boulevard. Several other sink holes have formed around the county, according to Sheriff John Ingram’s Facebook page.

NCDOT spokesman Brian Rick urges drivers to remain alert and vigilant while out on the roads. He said to drive slowly and keep a good eye on the road in front of you.

Deep puddles are forming on many roads, including Highway 17, throughout Brunswick County. Drive with caution as many times you cannot tell how deep they are until it’s too late.

The DOT has put straw onto some of the effected areas, however Rick said that is just a “Band-Aid fix” until they are able to get dry material in to repair any damages.

Sunset Beach officials have surveyed the beach strand and said the west end to Bird Island has moderate erosion. They said minor erosion has occurred on the east side to 13th St. They report the frontal dunes have moderate erosion.
