Dozens of azaleas planted at Long Leaf Park during Plant an Azalea Week

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Dozens of volunteers gathered at Long Leaf Park on Tuesday as part of “Plant an Azalea” Week, a yearly effort to enhance public spaces and preserve Wilmington’s identity as the “City of a Million Azaleas.”

Organizers say around 100 azaleas are planted each year during the weeklong beautification event. On Tuesday, volunteers focused their efforts near the park’s gazebo and pond.

The event is held annually in April and is aimed at restoring and maintaining the region’s longstanding connection to azaleas.

Cathy Poulos, chair of the Civics Improvements Committee for the Cape Fear Garden Club, said the event is something participants look forward to each year.

“I think when you go out and plant azaleas or shrubs or flowers in our public spaces it gives you a deeper appreciation and a feeling of ownership,” Poulos said.

Plant an Azalea Week runs through Saturday. The event is organized by the Parks Conservancy of New Hanover County and the Cape Fear Garden Club, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2025.
