Drug charge against driver accused of killing cyclists dropped

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Prosecutors have dropped a drug charge against a man accused of hitting and killing two cyclists.

Assistant District Attorney Doug Carriker says the state dismissed Thomas Grooms’s cocaine possession charge. Carriker says the investigation found the substance on Grooms was not cocaine, but mephedrone, which is not illegal.

Carriker says the prosecution is still trying to enhance Grooms’s sentencing on other charges, including two counts of second degree murder in the March deaths of David and Trey Doolittle.

Grooms is due back in court June 16.
