Earl Smith named New Hanover football coach

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Earl Smith is back. He’s returning to New Hanover High School as the head football coach of the Wildcats replacing Kevin Motsinger, who resigned last month. Smith also once resigned as the New Hanover head football coach. He left after coaching the Wildcats in the early 2000’s. Smith said he never would have left had his wife been able to land a job in Wilmington that she applied for, but didn’t get. Under Smith’s tenure at New Hanover the Wildcats advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 1994.

Earl Smith’s coaching record:
246 wins
97 losses
1 tie

11-11 in two seasons at New Hanover (2001-02)

Smith has been the head football at Ledford, Millbrook, New Hanover and Wake Forest-Rolesville. On Friday Smith said this is the only job he would have come out of retirement for. “Every time people would ask me and say would you ever get back in it and I would say no, but there’s one situation, but it’s probably not going to happen,(New Hanover) everything fell into place being able to work with Keith Moore (AD) again, and Mr. McAdams (principal).”
