Early morning crash in Burgaw claims man’s life

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) – A man was killed early Sunday morning after State Highway Patrol says he struck a highway sign and tree while on a motorcycle.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Casteen tells us  58-year-old Robert Bennett Jr. missed a stop sign at the intersection of New Road and Old River Road in Burgaw just before 3:00 a.m. Sunday and skidded off the road.

They say he died on scene. The sign was damaged as well at the Harley-Davidson bike Patrol says Bennett was driving.

Casteen says Bennett was ejected from the bike when he struck the sign. Highway Patrol believes alcohol played a factor in this deadly crash.
