East Carolina holds off Seahawks Softball
GREENVILLE, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Freshman Carson Shaner hit the first home run of her college career, but UNCW was unable to recover from a five-run second inning from East Carolina as the Pirates outlasted the Seahawks, 6-4, at ECU Softball Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The win lifted the Pirates’ record to 10-16 on the season while the Seahawks dropped to 7-14.
Shaner hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning to pull UNCW within a 5-4 margin. It was just the fourth home run by the Seahawks this season.
Senior shortstop Kelsey Bryan paced the Seahawks’ five-hit attack by going 2-for-4. Sophomores Booth Braswell and Meghan Whitecavage each added a hit in the loss.
Senior Sarah Davis took the loss in the circle after allowing five unearned runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
How It Happened: ECU scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 5-0 advantage the Pirates did not relinquish. Freshman outfielder Tyler King provided the big hit of the inning with a three-run double to left center.
Up Next: The Seahawks return home on Wednesday afternoon to welcome North Carolina to Boseman Field for a 4 p.m. non-conference tilt. It will be the Seahawks’ last home game until Mar. 30.
