ECU Baseball leaning on team to lead, not captains

GREENVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Today the ECU Pirates spoke to the media about their outlook on the 2018 season that starts next week.

ECU was picked to finish fourth in the American Athletic Conference after a 32-28 season where they won 7 of 17 of their conference battles.

The Pirates return 20 letter winners from last season’s team including sophomore pitcher Trey Benton from West Columbus High School and junior infielder Turner Brown from Whiteville High School.

In a surprising move, for the first time in school history the team did not name any team captains. Instead, it will be on the entire group to lead the team.

“We talk about it all the time, we want 35 leaders and we really feel like we have 35 leaders on this team,” Brown said. “We didn’t feel like there was a need for captains because we don’t think that’s the most important thing. We think that if we can feed off each other and lead each other then that’s what we need.”

ECU opens their season Feb. 16 and will come to Wilmington to play UNCW on March 21.
