Educational, business and government leaders gather for My Future NC event

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A statewide nonprofit focused on building the state’s future workforce and increasing educational attainment held a special event in downtown Wilmington on Thursday afternoon.

“My Future NC” was created in 2019 with the goal of having 2 million North Carolinians with either a degree or industry-certified credential by the year 2030.

Thursday’s event at Cape Fear Community College was one of 8 held across the state to share the results of the program’s progress.

In the southeastern area of the state, more than 125,000 people have received their degree or credential.

Senator Michael Lee said its all about closing the education and training gap.

“You know, we’re doing this so people can collaborate and brainstorm ideas and bring the different sectors together so that together, we can probably think of better ideas than we can separately,” Lee said. “And then once we leave, not making a one-day event, continuing to work together, collaborate so that we make sure that we can catch up first and then hit the goal in 2030.”

Currently, the state is projected to fall short of its 2 million person goal by around 71,000.
