Elizabeth City to be named as an official Coast Guard city

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (AP) — A Coast Guard news release states Elizabeth City will be designated as an official Coast Guard City.

The Virginian-Pilot reports the official ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Museum of the Albemarle’s front lawn. Adm. Paul Zukunft, the 25th commandant of the Coast Guard, will be presiding over the event.

Officials say Elizabeth City was denied the designation in 2005, but was encouraged to apply again. A former Coast Guard spokesman says several previously chosen towns had sent in multiple applications before they were awarded the title.

The designation is reserved for cities that have made special efforts to acknowledge the work of the Coast Guard members who are assigned to their area and extended considerations to the Coast Guard and their dependents.
