Elizabethtown man arrested on drug and gun charges

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) — An Elizabethtown man has been arrested on gun and drug charges, and then charged with attempted murder after allegedly being involved in a shooting.

On May 15th, a Be On the Look Out report was issued for a suspect vehicle after a shooting was reported in Elizabethtown.

According to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, a state trooper spotted it outside the city limits, and chased it down a dirt road.

Taquay Newkirk, 34, was taken into custody, and after the trooper found drugs in his vehicle, Newkirk faced possession of cocaine and MDMA charges.

He also allegedly had a gun reported stolen out of Bladen County.

Once Elizabethtown police had him in custody, they charged him with attempted first degree murder

He received a million dollar secured bond for all the charges.
