Entry of lawful permanent residents in “national interest,” DHS secretary says

NEW YORK (CBS) — Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly released a statement on Sunday regarding the entry of lawful permanent residents into the U.S.

The statement said, “In applying the provisions of the president’s executive order, I hereby deem the entry of lawful permanent residents to be in the national interest.”

The statement was released two days after President Trump signed an executive order banning people from seven countries from entering the U.S. and making other changes to America’s immigration and refugee policies.

“Accordingly, absent the receipt of significant derogatory information indicating a serious threat to public safety and welfare, lawful permanent resident status will be a dispositive factor in our case-by-case determinations,” it said.
