Eric Davis steps down at West Brunswick, Tim Smith hired at Pender


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There were two head coaching changes in our area on Tuesday.

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — After seven seasons in Shallotte Eric Davis has decided to step down as the boys head basketball coach. He won 63% of his games during his tenure with the Trojans. Davis will continue living in the area. In fact he’s planning to pursue a master’s degree in education.

BURGAW, NC (PENDER HIGH RELEASE) — Pender High School is pleased to announce Tim Smith as our head gootball coach. Coach Smith has most recently been the defensive coordinator for New Hanover High School. He helped NHHS earn back-to-back Mideastern Conference Championships. In the past two years, his defensive squads caused 34 turnovers with 21 interceptions in 2015 and forced 26 turnovers with 6 defensive touchdowns. Prior to New Hanover Tim Smith was thed defensive coordinator at Great Falls High School (2012-2014, Great Falls, SC), Lakewood High School (2010-2012, Sumter, SC), and Swansea High School (2008-2009, Swansea, SC).

Coach Smith also brings some collegiate coaching experience with him. He has had stints at Indiana State University (Terre Haute, IN), North Carolina Tech Prep School (Concord, NC), Northern State University (Aberdeen, SD), and Fort Valley State University (Fort Valley, GA). Coach Smith also played at the collegiate level at both Liberty University and Charleston Southern University. While being a defensive back he recorded 175 career tackles, earned All-Big South Conference, and Scholar Athlete 2003-2004.
