Escaped inmate’s brother sentenced to probation

BOLIVIA, NC (StarNewsOnline) — A Brunswick County man who switched inmate identification with his brother, allowing his brother to escape jail in January, was sentenced to 36 months probation Tuesday.

Curtis Hewett, 20, pleaded guilty in April to aiding and abetting his 23-year-old brother, William Hewett’s, escape on Jan. 29.

The escape led to a five-day manhunt that ended at the family’s Southport home and resulted in the arrests of at least six other family members and friends for harboring the fugitive.
